Minutes of the October 10, 2017 Friends of the Merrick Library Meeting
Present: Karen Tusa, President, Maureen Garvey, Secretary, Diane Christie, Treasurer, Steve Dershowitz and Fran Kommor.
Meeting called to order at 4:45 by Chair Karen Tusa.
The minutes of the September 2017 meeting, as emailed to the members, were read and accepted on a motion by Diane Christie, seconded by Fran Kommor and unanimously approved.
The Treasurer’s report, as follows, was read and accepted on a motion from Diane Christie, seconded by Maureen Garvey and unanimously approved:
Total in Savings: $5,809.42
Total in Checking: $360.24
Expenses related to the Merrick Eats Tasting Event: $138.00.
President Karen Tusa reported that we now have received 48 residential memberships. The yearly membership drive will begin on Nov. 1, when renewal notices will now be emailed to our current members.
Karen will speak to Howard Schwartz re: printing out the addresses for business memberships.
Karen asked the members present to review our current membership application and bookmark for possible revisions.
Steve Dershowitz suggested we consider getting a bank card reader so we can accept membership dues when people might not have the cash on them. Maureen Garvey said she would look into doing that.
Merrick Eats-tasting event
Karen Tusa reported on the results of the survey she sent to the vendors that participated, as well as on comments she received from attendees. One suggestion was a 5:30-7:30 time period; another was that tea should be available. Fran Kommor, who worked at the front table checking people in, noted that having the dessert table in the middle, rather than at the end, seemed to result in the vendors on the far side of the desserts not getting as much attention. It was agreed that next year the desserts should be placed at the end, and that bagels are not needed. It was further agreed that we could accommodate up to 80 people without sacrificing the ambiance of the event.
Craft and Vendor Fair
At this time we only have 8 vendors paid up. Those present agreed that we must have at least 20 vendors, and we set a cut-off date of Nov. 1st to reach that number. If we come very close, we will review whether to cancel or not at that time. The group felt that we needed to give the vendors who did sign up sufficient time to find another venue if we cancel the fair.
The Meditation Class has begun. There were five attendees; Karen greeted the first class.
Shredding event: Maureen Garvey obtained three quotes:
Shred Nation-$500 for 3 hours
DataStruction-$550 for 3 hours
A Shred Away-$300 for 3 hours
It was agreed that Maureen will contact Angela Capone to see if either March 24 or 31 is acceptable to the Library. Once a couple of potential dates are confirmed, Maureen will contact A Shred Away to schedule the program.
Karen Tusa reported that the Board needs a Publicity Chair who can create flyers and newsletter submittals. She is going to send an email to all Friends asking for a volunteer.
Karen Tusa reported that she has the name of three local CPAs; Treasurer Diane Christie will contact all three to ask for a quote on preparing the Friends’ tax return.
Karen noted that the Friends should be listed in the LI Herald’s “Getting Involved” guide, which is published each fall. She will contact the Herald to request our inclusion in next year’s issue.
The Friends will attempt to plan some event for next year’s National Friends of the Library Week, which takes place in October.
Upcoming meetings for the FOML: Nov 14, Dec 19, Jan 9, Feb 13, Mar 13, Apr 10, May 8 and June 12. All meetings are held on Tuesdays in the second floor conference room and start at 4:45PM.
A motion to adjourn was made by Fran Kommor at 5:35.
Respectfully submitted, Maureen Garvey, Secretary
