Meeting called to order at 4:47 by Chair Karen Tusa.
The minutes of the June 2017 meeting, as emailed to the members, were read and accepted on a motion by Howard Schwartz, seconded by Sandra Mintz and unanimously approved.
The Treasurer’s report, as follows, was read and accepted on a motion from Howard Schwartz, seconded by Marion Ormsten and unanimously approved:
Total in Savings: $5,809.42
Total in Checking: $436.24
Total Income: $211.80
Total Expenses: $544.00
President Karen Tusa reported that we have received two residential memberships, bringing that total up to 47.
Merrick Eats-tasting event fund-raiser
Ticket sales were closed at approximately 70; we have 15 confirmed vendors. Karen Tusa reported on the preparations and the work done over the summer by the committee. She noted that, if this is a success and is repeated next year, she would favor a mail-in registration to eliminate the need for patrons to come to the library in person to register.
Craft and Vendor Fair
The Friends Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, November 18 from 10:30am to 4pm.
Chair Howard Schwartz reported that out of his database of 250 vendors, 50 now no longer have viable email addresses. He urged those present to get information on any interesting vendors they encounter at craft fairs so that he can add them.
Re: bank fees, Karen Tusa spoke to Customer Relations as HSBC and explained the Friends’ particular needs. Our branch was contacted and the fees will be waived.
Website: Maureen Garvey reported that the new website, created in Weebly, is now up and running. It is now integrated into the Merrick Library website, in that the Library no longer has a separate page with a link to the site, as was the case. The Friends of the Merrick Library link, under “About Us” on the Library’s home page, goes directly to our site.
Shredding event: Howard Schwartz and Maureen Garvey said they have been unsuccessful in obtaining information about library-sponsored events, but will continue to research this. If it is financially feasible, we hope to sponsor this event in March of 2018.
Tech Support Program: Karen Tusa spoke to Ellen Firer about the possibility of the Friends sponsoring a tech support program, but Ellen explained that such support is available at the Library at all times, from Library staff, making a special program unnecessary.
The Meditation Class has been scheduled for four weeks in October. The Friends and Ellen Firer have agreed that whenever a meditation class is offered, the Friends will sponsor it, thereby “branding” this as a Friends event.
The Friends received a “Thank you” from Sandra Mintz for the get-well card she received.
Maureen Garvey reported that the Teen Librarian will look into holding a Red Cross baby-sitting class to be sponsored by the Friends.
Howard Schwartz opened a discussion about the low membership; Director Firer offered to put a slide on the home page of the Library’s site during the Friends’ membership drive. It was pointed out that anyone who joins between now and the new fiscal year will receive the additional months as well as the 2018 membership. Facebook posts were also discussed.
Upcoming meetings for the FOML: Oct 10, Nov 14, Dec 19, Jan 9, Feb 13, Mar 13, Apr 10, May 8 and June 12. All meetings are held on Tuesdays in the second floor conference room and start at 4:45PM.
A motion to adjourn was made by Howard Schwartz at 5:35.
